Vodafone UK

Updated May 14, 2026 · By Jules de Bruin · UK mobile operator with Together household savings and EU-inclusive roaming.

Updated May 2026. Vodafone UK is one of four UK mobile network operators (MNOs), headquartered in Newbury, Berkshire, and part of Vodafone Group plc. It runs its own 4G and 5G radio network, wholesales capacity to VOXI, Lebara UK, Talkmobile, Asda Mobile and 1pMobile, and bundles mobile with broadband through Vodafone Together. VeryMe Rewards supplies weekly perks, and Xtra plans include EU roaming. Vodafone consistently records the strongest central-London signal of any UK MNO.

What is Vodafone UK?

Vodafone UK is one of four UK mobile network operators, owning its own 2G/4G/5G radio network and running both consumer and wholesale businesses. It is the founding operating company of Vodafone Group plc, the multinational headquartered in Newbury, Berkshire, and serves around 18 million UK mobile customers directly plus several million more through host-network MVNOs.

Vodafone was launched in 1985 as a joint venture between Racal Electronics and a US/UK consortium, and placed the UK's first mobile call on 1 January 1985 from St Katharine Docks in London. The Newbury-headquartered consumer brand still trades under that name today, and the parent Group operates in 21+ markets worldwide. In the UK it competes head-to-head with EE, O2 and Three UK.

The retail proposition splits into three tiers: Basics (entry SIM-only from around GBP 8/month), Vodafone Pay Monthly (handset bundles) and the premium Xtra family, which adds EU roaming, unlimited 5G and Xtra perks such as inflight Wi-Fi credit or trade-in guarantees. Vodafone also runs VeryMe Rewards, a weekly perks app pushing free coffees, cinema tickets and high-street vouchers to active customers.

On the household side, Vodafone Together stacks discounts when a customer holds mobile and Vodafone home broadband (Pro II Wi-Fi or Full Fibre) on the same account, and the discount scales with the number of mobile lines on the bill. Vodafone also sells its own eSIM across its full plan range and supports number porting via the standard UK PAC code process.

Wholesale is a meaningful second business. Vodafone hosts VOXI (its in-house under-30s sub-brand with endless social data), Lebara UK (international-calling focus), Talkmobile (sub-GBP-10 SIM-only), Asda Mobile (supermarket prepay) and is the partial host network for 1pMobile alongside EE. The proposed Vodafone-Three UK merger received CMA approval in December 2024 and completed in June 2025, creating VodafoneThree — the UK's largest network by subscriber count, though the two brands and networks are still operating in parallel during integration.

How does Vodafone UK compare to other UK networks?

Vodafone sits in the premium tier alongside EE, with O2 and Three UK rounding out the MNO four. Vodafone's standout strengths are central-London signal, EU-inclusive Xtra plans and the Together household discount; its weak spots are rural and Scottish-highlands coverage, where EE typically wins.

Operator Signature strength SIM-only entry EU roaming Annual rise
Vodafone Central London signal, Together bundle GBP 8/mo (Basics) Inclusive on Xtra GBP 2.50/mo flat
EE Rural & Scotland coverage GBP 12/mo Roam Abroad Pass add-on GBP 1.50/mo flat
O2 Priority perks, Disney+ bundle GBP 10/mo 25GB EU cap then surcharge CPI + 3.9%
Three UK Cheap unlimited data GBP 10/mo Go Roam EU add-on CPI + 3.9%

Independent Opensignal reports through 2024-25 placed Vodafone at or near the top for 5G availability in London and the South East, although EE typically wins on UK-wide download speed and rural reach. Vodafone's flat GBP 2.50/month annual increase (introduced April 2024 to replace the older CPI+3.9% model) is now the operator's standard contract term and matches Ofcom's new transparency rules.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which MVNOs run on the Vodafone UK network? expand_more

Vodafone is the host network for VOXI (its own under-30s sub-brand), Lebara UK (international calling), Talkmobile (sub-GBP-10 SIM-only) and Asda Mobile (supermarket prepay). It is also the partial host for 1pMobile, which spreads traffic across both Vodafone and EE depending on availability. All five share Vodafone's 4G and 5G coverage footprint.

Does Vodafone UK include EU roaming? expand_more

Yes on Xtra plans — EU roaming up to a fair-use cap is bundled. On entry-level Basics and Pay Monthly plans, Vodafone charges a daily GBP 2.42 roaming fee in the EU after the post-Brexit reintroduction in 2022. Customers travelling beyond the EU can buy Vodafone Global Roaming Plus as an add-on covering 80+ destinations.

Is Vodafone the best network in central London? expand_more

For raw signal strength in Zones 1-2, yes — Vodafone consistently leads Opensignal and RootMetrics London panels for 5G availability and indoor reliability, helped by dense small-cell deployment around the City and West End. EE remains stronger on UK-wide averages and rural coverage; Three has the cheapest unlimited data but thinner 5G outside London.

What is Vodafone Together? expand_more

Vodafone Together is the household bundle that discounts mobile and Vodafone home broadband (Pro II Wi-Fi, Full Fibre 100/200/500/900/1.6 Gbps) when held on the same bill. Savings scale with the number of mobile lines on the account — typically 10% off broadband plus mobile credits — and the bundle includes a single bill, single login and Vodafone's WiFi-7-ready Pro router. It replaces the older Vodafone Family Plan branding.

Has Vodafone UK merged with Three? expand_more

Yes. The CMA approved the Vodafone-Three UK merger in December 2024 subject to remedies, and the deal completed in June 2025, forming VodafoneThree. The combined business is the UK's largest mobile network by customer count, but both brands and their separate radio networks continue to operate in parallel through the multi-year integration period, with consolidation expected by 2028.
