Tesco Mobile

Tesco Mobile is operated from Welwyn Garden City, the same Hertfordshire town as Tesco PLC's headquarters. It has roughly 5 million customers, making it both the largest supermarket-branded mobile brand in the UK and one of the largest MVNOs in Europe. Every Tesco Mobile SIM uses the O2 UK radio network — the same masts and spectrum as O2 and giffgaff — and customers see "O2-UK" as the network ID on their phone.

The brand launched in 2003 as a 50/50 joint venture between Tesco and Telefonica UK (the company that became O2, then Virgin Media O2 after the 2021 merger with Liberty Global). On 16 December 2024, Tesco completed the purchase of Virgin Media O2's 50% shareholding for GBP 3 billion, taking full ownership while signing a 10-year wholesale agreement that keeps the brand on the O2 network through at least 2034. The deal made Tesco the first major UK grocer to fully own its mobile arm.

Tesco Mobile's commercial pitch leans on two pillars: Clubcard integration (points on monthly spend, Family Perks bill discounts, and Clubcard Prices on selected plans) and a long-standing fixed-price guarantee with no mid-contract price increases on most plans. Both differentiate it from EE, Vodafone, and Three, all of which apply annual inflation-linked rises mid-contract.

Clubcard points. Every Tesco Mobile customer who links their Clubcard earns 1 point per GBP 1 spent on airtime, with bonus point promotions running periodically. Points convert to GBP 0.01 each when spent on Tesco groceries, or up to 3x face value at Reward Partners like RAC, Disney+, Pizza Express, and cinema chains. A GBP 15/month SIM therefore earns GBP 1.80/year in groceries or up to GBP 5.40/year at Reward Partners — an effective discount of roughly 1% to 3%.

Family Perks. Launched in 2022, Family Perks gives a bill discount to households that pool multiple Tesco Mobile lines under one Clubcard. The discount scales by line count: GBP 3 off the first line, GBP 6 off a second, GBP 9 off a third, and so on, capped at GBP 36/month total across up to six lines. A family with four lines saves GBP 30 every month — equivalent to a free fifth SIM in many cases.

Clubcard Prices. Selected SIM-only and pay-monthly tariffs carry a "Clubcard Price" badge: linked Clubcard members pay the lower headline rate, non-members pay roughly 15-25% more for the same plan. This mirrors the in-store dual-pricing Tesco rolled out in 2022, and operates the same way in the mobile catalogue.

The cumulative effect is that an engaged Clubcard household typically pays the lowest effective per-line cost on the O2 network — often below sister brand giffgaff for equivalent allowances, despite Tesco Mobile's higher headline prices.
